The Falling Man | Behind The Photo | 100 Photos | TIME

Took an Express Subway train from times square to Chambers [street] which is to stop just before the world trade Center the first thing I saw was the two world trade centers both of them had smoke and fire coming from I just started making my pictures I was photographing the burning building when Emt says oh my gosh. Look at that, and we started seeing people coming down at the building I instinctively picked up my camera and started photographing them following him as they came down Until I photographed what must become known as the falling man It’s a very quiet photograph It’s not like a lot of other violent photographs from other disasters There’s no blood. There’s [no] guts. There’s nobody getting shot, but people react to it in a way that They feel that they can relate to this photograph That they might have been in the same situation, and they might have had to make whatever choice the man in the photograph made You have to be very aware of your surroundings when you’re in a situation like this you [have] to be careful that you don’t become [a] victim journalists don’t run away from falling building We don’t run away from the fire we run to it because it’s our job to record history [I] Didn’t know I [had] that photograph of that man in that position Until I actually saw it on my computer when I got back to [the] office I Called one of our photo editors, and I showed him the picture I said I [this] is it this has got to be the picture this man was like an arrow bisecting the two world trade centers I Woke up the next morning, and I opened up the paper, and there was my photograph of following that It was a very brave thing for them to use that picture it was the only picture that was like that of anybody falling from the building [the] only picture that showed any kind of human interaction [like] that a paper in Allentown Pennsylvania used the picture they put it on their whole back page in the newspaper And then the editor said that it was that important to photograph And he got a lot of mail letters the editor saying he shouldn’t have run this this is not something I want my children to see Tom [Juneau] the author of the esquire article. He’s the one who came up with the name the falling man That was the name of the article And it sort of stuck I’ve never regretted taking that photograph at all. It’s probably one of the only photographs that actually shows someone dying that [day] We have a terrorist attack on our own soil And we still don’t see pictures of our people dying and this is a photograph of someone dying you

  1. They were not just physically tortured they were also mentally can’t imagine how that man was thinking and felt for that decision poor guy

  2. Just to think what could have been going through his head thinking to himself "It will take to long for rescuers… The fire is getting closer I feel the ground shaking… There's no way out… So this is it… If I jump… I can be let free… " And he jumps and all he would see us the building and the ground coming to the end at a fast rate… God bless everyone who had no choice… But jump and those who couldn't make it 😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😥😥😥😰😔😔😔😔😖😖😖😫😫😩😩

  3. Only plane that didnt make it to its destination was heading for the people responsible, in the capital, to throw us off their scent. Well, most of us…

  4. It's funny how less raw footage is on YouTube. This should never be touch and let people who never saw this live, see it and think and process how everything happen instead of people telling their way of telling it

  5. I was in the 7th grade. Math class. The jumpers I didn’t realize until I was older. It terrifies me. Life was so much better before 9/11-2001. I miss the 90’s.

  6. Im so Thankful for all of the Wonderful people God put on this earth for us! For them to try and Save the Twin towers! I love each and everyone of the people no matter what Gender I don’t care I just honestly love from the bottom of my loving, tender heart ♥️ God Bless America!

  7. I’m 18 years old, so I was 9 months old when 9/11 happened. I don’t remember it but it feels like it’s a part of me almost more than anything else in my American heritage. It’s heart wrenching to see that man in the state of surrender. I pray for his souls and I hope he was praying to. I think there’s a good chance that the very next thing he saw and felt was God’s comforting smile as He brought that man into His kingdom. #neverforget

  8. I'm from New Zealand but this attack still sticks with me everyday as we lost kiwis in the towers. My thoughts and prayers still go to the victims family's may they rest in PARADISE 😢

  9. We know the terrors we faced as a nation that dreadful day, but for the love of everything Holy, please, leave that man his remaining dignity. His surviving loved ones have to live with this image of utter despair & desperation! This hurts & we need to remember he's with the Lord, & NOT to have his despair immortalized. 💔😭

  10. I hope the falling man can rest peacefully, I can't imagine what went through his mind while falling..
May whoever this man is rest in peace

  11. That day my daughter was sick and I stayed home with her on 9-11-01 and I worked on that building and I just feel so bad because it should have been me and not some innocent man RIP to everyone who died and lost someone that day 💔💔😥😢

  12. We will never forget, May they rest in peace, May we live in peace. God bless the United States, I love you all my fellow Americans. ~From Georgia.

  13. Its so gut wreching thinking that people sat there contemplating which way they wanted to die. Burning to death or falling to their death. Makes me fucking cry like a baby

  14. 2 of my worst ways to die IMO ,being burned to death or falling to my death. I couldn't even fathom having to choose one of the 2

  15. This is the worst event in history and we have to raise awareness and just let this sink in and we should let them rest in peace and just this even goes to show how much we didnt care about things like this because we thought it would never happen but when it did we were all surprised

  16. Let us hope……these people lived a good life…that we wish that they never deserved this…..those people, we're all good people….they did nothing to deserve this…..let us all pray that these people are in a better place 😭

  17. He briefly had a relief from the heat and smoke. RIP. The monsters that took part in this will pay some day, hopefully soon.

  18. It’s even more sad some victims who chose to fall have been ignored and shunned by the public and their families because it made it look like suicide. Shame on those who think it was “pitiful suicide”. It was murder. Their loved ones should pray they went without pain instead of being burned or suffocated.

  19. I thought for years about what could have been done to ensure the safety of these people should a disaster break out at the World Trade Center like we had on September 11, 2001. The one thing that I thought of was having a supply of emergency parachutes. They would have been designed in such a way that one could easily use them. One could have a good chance at survival rather than jumping to their death or being crushed to death when the towers fell.

  20. I watched a documentary about survivors and a man in the opposite tower had eye contact with a falling woman. That would haunt me forever. This will haunt me forever. But those good souls that lost their lives on 9/11 should live with us forever. We will never forget

  21. I am really feeling for this man and the other who jumped. May god rest them all in peice., Cant even imagine for this situation.
So Many YEars have gone but still the real culprits are not punished.
9/11 – 3000 AMericans killed, thousands of Afghani Citizens Killed, More than a Million Iraqi Civilians Killed including Women and Children. and the irony is that among all of the killed people, they paid price of what the had not done.
Will wait for that time when Americans will stand and ask their government officials to punish the real culprits and ask them questions like
    1. How did the twin towers fell when it couldn't have melted from a jet fuel.?
    2. Even if we agree that it fell due to jet fuel, how did it fell so straight like a free fall?
    3. What thing did actually hit pentagon ?
    4. How did the passport of the alleged culprits survived when the building it self couldnt survived? How did they manage to find the passports in the wreckage?
My Dear Brothers and Sisters there are so many questions like this that should be asked from the American Government and the Bush Administration, i really pitty the American Tax PAyers that their trillions of Dollars have been used for Killing Americans themselves and also other poeple in the World.

  22. EVERYONE, including children need to see this so they NEVER forget! The more denial there is instead of the reality of that day, will guarantee it will happen again.

  23. I hope no one takes offence, but Though it was unimaginably awful decision he had to make..there just seems to me to be a calm and peace about him in this photo. Learning recently he came from a christian background, it feels he had did the only thing he could…leapt, committing himself into his Father's hands.🙏😥RIHP🙏

  24. This man deserves our utmost respect He did not deserve his fate. For me he represents all those who jumped. May they and all of the victims of 9/11/2001 be resting well.

  25. This is so heartbreaking, but I think it's important that we see the human toll, the horror these people suffered. But we need to see it, to respect the victims.

  26. There is a devastating elegance to the picture, very depressing. Others have pointed out his identity. He does seem like a lanky black man if u see closely.

  27. We do know who it is and the family said so. Then they denied it . He is Noberto Hernandez a pastry chef. The family denies it now because they believe he committed suicide ,which is a sin in their eyes. It would help them to understand that suicides do not go to hell. Accept it. I had to accept the loss of my two children as well.

  28. Why was all the steel ship to China and no specimens where taken ..makes you wonder..who is really at fault here…just saying ..Karma never sleeps.

  29. I'm sorry, but this guy should stfu around 2:00. Journalists run to instead of away things like this eh? Give me a break. Jesus.

  30. That only person who kill few people Osama Bin Leden
    God forgives Osama
Pls like if you miss World Trade Center

  31. The photo should not have been tooken, I would rather die, and have my family not known, then to have them and everybody else see me die. Don t hide the truth, But that man will always be humiliated, He can never rest, cause now everyone saw him die.

  32. I was in kindergarten when this happened. I was 5 and living in the other side of the world. My memories are vague, but I can still remember that this was first sight I had on the morning of Sept 12. Seeing people falling from the building, even if it is just on the tv screen, it was really traumatic and i cant even imagine how people inside the building and airplanes felt during that time.

  33. Where were you when it happened?
I had just arrived in Grand Central in NYC. Before going to work I stopped at the Chase Bank ATMS in GC. I was waiting in line behind this man who was on his cell phone – he turned wide-eyed to me and said OMG a plane just hit the World Trade Center building. By the time I got to my office building across Lexington Avenue the second tower was struck.

  34. There are few, if any, images that capture the human spirit at its finest. Finest, you say? Yes, finest. Consider… a man through no fault of his own, thrust into an impossible situation and who, like many that day, didn't expect to have their life so brutally cut short. His expectation might have been to go to work that day and like any other day go home, relax, have a pleasant evening, go to bed, get up, go to work… The choice he might have faced was… dinner, what'll it be?

It wasn't to be. Others – evil, malignant creatures devoid of all compassion and love – had decided his fate. As he surveyed the devastation, did the realisation come, that for him there was no way out, that the only choice he had was how he would die, because die he must. And then did he step out onto that broken ledge, close his eyes and let go?

And in doing so become a symbol of eternity in which generations that he will never know will point and say, there went a brave man.

  35. Before leaving for work on 9/11, I started two vcrs with 6 hour tapes. One on NBC and one on ABC. That night I taped 6 hours of CBS while I channel surfed on the other vcr. The tapes made during the day show victims jumping from the towers. Some of those same network images when shown days later do not have the falling victims in the shots. Apparently the tapes were sanitized and the images were digitally removed.

  36. I dont care that you took the picture, but I do care that you sat here for four minutes going on about your career and only used him as an object in your pursuit of history. My heart grieves for his continued anonymity, the loss of a soul who in death benefits others. Rest easy, sir, for you are not just the "falling man", you were a son of this earth and to the earth you returned.

  37. Many of my friends have seen this before as I post it every year. I wrote this poem a couple of days after 911, around September 14th 2001, not long after I saw the Pastry Chef fly by the windows. I’ve never been able to forget the man. I haven’t forgotten, and my poem is dedicated to all those memories who flew by the same windows. Here we are all these years later, it’s still going on as everyone knows, and sometimes I think we’ve forgotten. Just look at the “squad!”
    THE PASTRY CHEF
THEN …. OUT THROUGH THE WINDOW … HIS BODY ON FIRE,
ALL THE PASTRIES WERE SCATTERED AROUND.
THE FIRE WENT OUT WITH THE FIRST GUST OF WIND.
… 99 FLOORS TO THE GROUND.
WHAT’S HAPPENED HE WONDERED TO REASON?
THE CHAOS, THE DEAD AND THE HEAT.
ONE MOMENT A CHEF IN THE TOWER …
… 80 FLOORS DOWN TO THE STREET.
MY GOD … MY GOD… MY ONLY GOD,
YOUR SERVANT IS ALMOST TO DIE.
    REMEMBER ME IN A MOMENT.
… 50 FLOORS UP IN THE SKY.
HE SPINS TO FACE THE HEAVENS,
HIS SPEED IS UP TO MAX.
HE SEES THE EYES OF GOD ON HIM,
… 20 FLOORS DOWN TO THE BLACKS.
HE GASPS A BREATH INSIDE HIMSELF
HIS EYES ARE CLOSED UP TIGHT,
    IT’S OVER IN AN INSTANT,

    HE STANDS BEFORE THE LIGHT.
A SAINT AND A HERO, A VICTIM OF WAR,
… FIRST SOLDIERS IN BATTLE TO DIE.
A PICTURE OF COURAGE, OF HATRED AND WASTE.
WE'LL NEVER FORGET YOU … NO LIE!
HIS GRAVE IN A CORNER ON THE MEZZANINE ROOF,
THE TOWER PILED DEEP ON HIS BONES.
WE'VE ONLY THAT PICTURE … A MOMENT IN TIME,
    “SUCH HORROR”, WE SADLY BEMOAN.
I FEAR THAT IT’S JUST THE BEGINNING,
    MORE FIRES, DEBRIS, AND REVENGE.
MORE TOWERS, MORE CITIES, MORE CHAOS,
    THE PROMISE TO SOMEDAY AVENGE.
THEY NEVER FOUND HIS WEDDING RING,
    THEY NEVER HEARD HIS SCREAM.
THEY NEVER FOUND A TRACE OF HIM
    A NIGHTMARE … NOT A DREAM.

  38. What sort of humans are these who blew up this building? They are the same who have indoctrinated the youth on their left , socialistic, communistic thinking. They are the same who ORGANIZED GRETA for the left-thinking youth. Everything is directing to destroy human beings, family structures. They are the same who organize the whole drug trafficking worldwide. No one believes in flying airplanes anymore. SO! WHAT SORT OF HUMANS (are they humans) are these , who take responsibility for thousands of tragedy and sufferings …. Why are people too stupid to understand that their presidents are not for the peoples welfare but only for their world power and bank account! I.e. the whole BUSH-FAMILY, the CLINTONS, THE OBAMAS… They all hang in this in!!!
