MC3306 How to Write a TV News Package 2: The Script

everyone it's Dale again and so in the first video in this series of tutorials I went through and prepared for the story logged the sound came up with a potential lead came up with a couple of potential closes chunk the information together so now I'm ready to go ahead and start writing so how we're gonna do that I go to my website and on the resources page there is that sample packaged script so I'm gonna go ahead and open that up so we're gonna have two scripts open so now first thing I'm gonna do is go in here and this story is pet-adoption so I do that I'm still the reporter and the photographer let's say I'm happy with that lead so I'm gonna go ahead and carry this over so I'm gonna go ahead and already knock out my lead and that is not the correct font size obviously so let's make that sixteen like the rest of it and I want it all I want it all capital so let's see where is that of course it would change the case there we go I wanted all uppercase okay so now I'm gonna go in here and hit the three dashes and so now I have my anchor introduction done Valentine's Day is the perfect day to find a new love in your life even if it has four legs Dail blasts game has more in this bobcat update take package fool so now we're good to go I'm gonna go ahead and get rid of the rest of the script now because that obviously has nothing to do with what we're doing and remember I have a couple of sound bites already logged so I want to go ahead and and are not logged I've got them cut apart so I want to go ahead and log those sound bites because that's gonna play on how I write the rest of the story so remember I've got this one little quick NAT pop here here little girl saying awesome you turn this up a little bit so I've got that and I'm just gonna keep track of what they how long they run I'll just write that here and then she has a second bite that I might picture so take them home that's about two seconds as well okay so that's her bites those are her bites here we have she says so it's a little hard to so when you know they already know they already that's okay that runs 12 seconds and I need to get her name so I forgot to log her name okay Kiki say install your first class okay some dogs and cats here from cackling animal shelter okay okay and so now I've got that logged and now remember we have this 30-second sound bite here that I would either use the first half or the second half so let me go ahead and log this whole thing ears and rescues okay they're fighting for attention and allowed the stressful environment not just for the people coming to see the pet but for the that's okay so as you can see logging sound not exactly the most fun thing in the world to do but let's see that would be it's about sixteen seconds let's just guesstimate there we'll get a better sense later as we work on the story so this is a second bite when you so that one was about 14 again I can go back in and log that sound so then here is the soldier at the very end so remember we have this one little quick nap pop from him gotta sell my wife on it so let's that's about three seconds now let's log these other two sound but the cat is good with the kids and the cat and that one was about nine seconds again I'll go back and log that sound later if I decide to use that rolled around he's a good listens to he's obedient okay so and that runs five six seconds roughly I need to get his name so I need to go back up here to the interview No what's this a potential adopter okay so now we have all of our sound logs so now it's time to start writing so I really do like this idea of opening and closing with this girl and I'm probably gonna end with that great shot of the video of Lee getting licked by that dog so I'm gonna kind of quickly write a script here this isn't probably going to be the most perfect script by any means but I just want you to see the process of how I'm gonna do that so I could start straight off with this girl's soundbite of Awesome but that doesn't quite make sense so I want one quick line to lead into that and I might say something like when your day consists of meeting new puppies there's only one way to describe it I wouldn't use an exclamation mark okay so now I've got her awesome part here I need her name because she does reference her name and then I will show her actually you know what I screwed up here's an exact problem with how I want to write this story now I want to write to her holding the dog but I don't really have any other video of her holding the dog so that's already one error I've made so I'm gonna have to play with the video a little bit but I need to get her name first okay Mackenzie Martin so just one of dozens pet lovers who stopped by the Pet Smart and New Braunfels this Valentine's to essentially meet or find a new family friend let's see I'm trying to think of where I'm gonna go next I probably want to go to Salina next and I kind of like this soundbite it's a second long but it plays perfectly in that so I could actually you know what I'm sorry this is the writing process you're kind of watching the sausage being made so that's why things change on the fly I want to explain that there were four groups that this was a big deal so for rescue groups came together throw a huge pet adoption day so four groups from around the hill country came together throw a huge adoption day and now I can either use this soundbite or I can paraphrase what she says here and use this soundbite I kind of like this one better because if you remember she she kind of trails off here at the end and it dies out so yes the soundbite is one second too long but it's good so one second isn't gonna kill I mean if it was like twenty seconds too long I would be concerned about it but I'm not a I'm not all that concerned with one second going over so I'm gonna go ahead and move her name over and that one is sixteen so now we're now we're up here some dogs like Rambo for an instant let's see how about love at first sight so I've got that video I've got that great video of him and I've got different parts of it so I don't have to use the kissing part here I want to save that for the clothes so now I'm gonna use a sound bite from I'm gonna use that little NAT pop got to sell my wife on it his name is Lee Spitler has some work to do to take Rambo home and as his wife said he could get a dog once he fix the fence in the backyard so now I'm gonna go Spitler I don't know if I have enough video to cover this we'll see when we get to the editing process but I'm talking a lot here about this guy and I don't have a lot of video so again we've run into a problem here Lee Spitler has some work to do to take Rambo home his wife said he could get a dog once he fixed the fence in the backyard he's not worried about it though he's already looking forward to the next step so now I'm gonna run this sound bite of him saying they're good they talked about the home visit ok so I'm probably getting pretty long at this point I'm probably right around that minute phase we'll go ahead and add up the time here in a second when I read it so I've got video of the woman adopting that dog several dogs found their forever homes today others are still waiting for the others are still waiting how about I do that but McKinsey has advice for everyone out there or for all pet lovers out there how about that take them home okay so now I'm gonna end I'm gonna go ahead and get rid of these other sound bites because I'm not gonna use them and I just deleted my whole script so be careful with that take them home and now I'm going to reference that video of the dog kissing the guy might even get a nice kiss for Valentine's Day Dale Blasingame Bobcat update okay so there you have it I have a script here now I want to get rid of these extra extra lines the script is yeah I just deleted the whole script again so again be very careful when you're working with the script I admit it's not the best so we've got a three page script here and I'm gonna go ahead and I'm going to go ahead and time this script so again I'm not gonna use the sound bites I'm just gonna read it and then I'll add in the sound bites here in just a second so I'm gonna get on my phone here load up the stopwatch and start when your day consists of meeting new puppies there's only one way to describe it mackynzie Martin was just one of dozens of pet lovers who stopped by the Petsmart in New Braunfels this Valentine's Day to potentially find a new family friend for rescue groups from around the whole country came together to throw this huge pet adoption day some dogs like Rambo experienced love at first sight Lisa fitler has some work to do though to take Rambo home his wife said he could get a dog once he fixed the fence in the backyard he isn't all that worried about it though already looking forward to the next step several dogs found their forever homes today others are still waiting but McKenzie has advice for all pet lovers out there you might even get a nice kiss for Valentine's Day Dale Blasingame Bobcat update okay so that ran 43 seconds I found a error here so I'm gonna fix that so we're gonna add two seconds 16 seconds so that's 18 21 30 32 so my script is about 17 a minute 15 so that's right in the window so I'm pretty good to go with that again not the absolute greatest script but for a first draft not good I do think we're gonna run into some errors or problems right here when we have to start working on the video because I know I do not have enough video to cover that especially since I'm using another shot of Rambo right here I do have some shots of Rambo by himself though so I might I might be okay there before I go I need to clean up this script so I need to go in and add the runs times and out cues and stuff like that so I would come down to right here and this runs 16 seconds and pets themselves okay and then I've got that's just a quick little Matt pop so I don't really need an out cue when I go ahead and copy and paste that so now where's the next soundbite right here this one runs nine seconds and the outcue is and everything and then I've got another little NAT pop right here and that one runs two seconds okay so now you'll see I don't have a stand up in this story that's okay I have my outcue here I've got my anchor lead I've got the toss here and now the script is ready to go for it and for the web version which we'll talk about next
